Singapore Math

Singapore Math

Singapore Math refers to a teaching method based on the curriculum developed in Singapore for primary and secondary mathematics education. It emphasizes a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to teaching mathematical concepts, focusing on building a deep understanding of mathematical principles through hands-on experiences, visual representations, and problem-solving.

Here are some key characteristics of Singapore Math:

Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Approach

This approach starts by introducing mathematical concepts using physical objects or manipulatives (concrete), followed by representing these concepts with pictures or diagrams (pictorial), before moving on to abstract symbols and algorithms (abstract).

Focus on Problem Solving

Singapore Math places a strong emphasis on problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and mathematical reasoning. Students are encouraged to explore multiple strategies and approaches to solve problems, rather than relying solely on memorization or rote learning.

Coherence and Mastery

The curriculum is designed to build upon foundational concepts gradually, with each topic interconnected and building upon previous knowledge. Students are given ample time to develop a deep understanding of each concept before moving on to more advanced topics.

Visualization and Model Drawing

Visual representations, such as bar models or diagrams, are commonly used in Singapore Math to help students visualize and understand abstract mathematical concepts. Model drawing, in particular, is a problem-solving strategy that helps students break down complex problems into simpler parts.

Emphasis on Number Sense

Singapore Math focuses on developing students' number sense, which involves understanding the relationships between numbers, the magnitude of numbers, and the flexibility to manipulate numbers mentally.

Real-World Applications

Mathematical concepts are often taught in the context of real-world scenarios or everyday situations, helping students see the relevance and practical applications of mathematics in their lives.

Singapore Math has gained popularity worldwide for its effectiveness in developing strong mathematical skills and conceptual understanding among students. Many countries and educational systems have adopted elements of the Singapore Math approach or incorporated Singapore Math textbooks and resources into their curriculum.

My twins absolutely love coming here. They get to jump around, explore, get messy and follow their instincts. And I love it because I get to sit back with a coffee and let them discover how the world works.

Rav is a fantastic host, clearly passionate and knowledgeable in early childhood development. The stations setup for the kids are lots of fun and very inviting. A very relaxed space to enjoy a morning with a healthy dose of social interaction for kids and parents alike. Appreciated the thoughtful gesture of having some hot coffee available for the parents, and even some home grown papaya for the kids as a snack!

Wonderful place for your child to play and get messy in a safe environment! So many activities to try, your kids won't get bored. Rav the host is very friendly and helpful too with Mommy-related insights 😊 Definitely recommend! Parking is a little tricky as it's a housing area but you'll manage. It's worth it.
